Massage therapy has gained a lot of ground as a complement to conventional medicine. Research studies conducted in the past decade have shown that massage has medically beneficial effects – such as lowering blood pressure and increasing oxygen absorption – in addition to its ability to relax both the mind and tense muscle tissue.

Massage therapy is the manual manipulation of the body’s soft tissue to prevent or reduce pain and stress, and to promote health and well-being. The success of massage therapy has spawned many methods, systems and types (e.g., Swedish, shiatsu, trigger point therapies).

All massage therapy involves the manipulation of soft tissue – kneading, pressing or stroking – by a practitioner licensed from an accredited school. Associated with relieving stress and anxiety, massage has been used to supplement the treatment or management of soft-tissue injuries, physiological and emotional disorders, and pain.

People with pre-existing conditions or diseases should consult their physician before undergoing massage therapy. Massage may not be appropriate for certain conditions, including high blood pressure (hypertension) and certain skin conditions.

Massage therapy has existed as a healing discipline for thousands of years. Although it is often associated with Eastern culture, massage therapy was practiced by the ancient Greeks and Romans.

However, the father of modern Western massage therapy was a Swede named Per Henrik Ling (1776-1839). Ling developed a system that integrated massage and active and passive exercises. His system spread quickly from Sweden and is today known as Swedish massage. Swedish massage remains the most common type of massage performed around the world.

Massage is often referred to as a type of complementary medicine. This means it is used in conjunction with (and not as an alternative to) conventional medicine. For instance, a physician may recommend massage therapy following an operation or along with prescribed medication.

Generally, massage therapy improves circulation of blood and lymph. By improving the circulation of blood, a greater amount of oxygen and nutrients are distributed throughout the body. Increasing the flow of lymph helps to remove more waste and toxins.

The direct action of massage – the kneading, rubbing and so forth – mechanically helps these substances to circulate. Massage can stimulate nerves and normalize muscle contraction, which also helps improve circulation.

This can have positive effects on a large number of conditions, injuries and illnesses, including:

Allergies

Acute and chronic pain

Anxiety, stress and depression

Asthma and some upper respiratory diseases (e.g., bronchitis)

Carpal tunnel syndrome

Circulatory disorders

Osteoarthritis

Digestive disorders (e.g., constipation and diarrhea)

Headaches and migraines

Insomnia

Myofascial pain

Sinusitis

Sports-related injuries (e.g., pulled muscles, sprained ligaments)
The University of Miami School of Medicine’s Touch Research Institute has conducted more than 100 studies on the effects of massage therapy and found significant benefits in many areas. For instance, massage therapy appears to help preterm infants to grow, decrease levels of glucose in people with diabetes, increase pulmonary function in asthma patients, improve immune functions for people with HIV and for cancer patients, alleviate depressive symptoms, reduce pain and stress hormones, and boost mental alertness and performance.

Other studies also appear to support the notion that massage therapy promotes good health. Researchers recently found evidence that massage therapy can reduce pain and improve function of knees affected by osteoarthritis.

Another study found that massage of infants 6 months old and younger facilitates sleep and reduces stress and crying episodes.

Although generally safe, massage therapy is not a cure-all, and qualified, licensed professionals do not claim it to be. In some cases, massage should not be performed, or performed only with caution. Generally, if you have a pre-existing medical condition, you should talk with your physician before undergoing massage therapy.

Many different types of massage systems have appeared. Some practitioners may apply the elements of several styles. Some styles of massage use light pressure, and some use deep pressure. Some styles utilize skin oils or lotions, while some do not. Be sure to talk with your massage therapist before your appointment to make certain you know what to expect. Also, check to make sure your massage therapist is well-trained and is licensed in the state in which he/she practices. Although the various techniques of massage are almost too numerous to count, a few of the more common massage systems include:

Swedish massage. The most commonly used form of massage therapy. Strokes, kneading and friction are applied to the superficial layers of muscles and combined with active and passive movements of the joints. Friction is the deepest stroke in the repertoire of Swedish massage. In this technique, deep, specific strokes cause underlying tissues to rub against one another, increasing blood flow and circulation.

Deep-tissue massage. Focuses on deeper muscle layers, using slow strokes and deep finger pressure to release tension.

Trigger-point therapy. Concentrates on trigger points – tender or irritated areas on muscle – to alleviate muscle spasms and pain. Also called neuromuscular therapy or myotherapy, it is similar to acupressure.

Shiatsu. A Japanese/Chinese system in which pressure is applied to special points on the body. It is similar, but not identical, to acupressure, which uses finger-pressure techniques on specific areas on the body.

Reflexology. Focuses on the feet or feet and hands to affect other parts of the body. Points on the feet and hands are believed to be connected to certain organs and tissues; massaging these points affects the corresponding body part.

Chair massage. Performed with the person seated in a special chair with cushions supporting the front of the body and face. It is also called corporate or on-site massage because it was originally developed for the workplace, with sessions lasting no more than 30 minutes.

Los Angeles Rodeo Drive The Golden Triangle
Santa Monica Boulevard to the north, Wilshire Boulevard to the south and Canon Drive to the east, Los Angeles CA

The so-called Golden Triangle holds more wealth and fine stores than most small countries. At its center is the renowned Rodeo Drive. It is the street on which Julia Roberts had her shopping spree in Pretty Woman. This is also the street that few people who don't spend their life in front of the camera can afford. And throughout the Triangle, you will see a curious collection of nouveau riche types sauntering about that will make you feel like you're watching an episode of Lifestyles of the Rich & Famous: The Reality Show.
Los Angeles Robertson
This small street could be seen as a diorama for hip Los Angeles. Featuring the exclusiveness of Beverly Hills and the cutting-edge cool of Melrose, this small stretch is where Hollywood hipsters with real money shop. There are Curve's modern edgy outfits, high-end Maxfield's discount outlet, Maxfield Blue, an Industry MAC store, and a shimmering Georgio Armani Home store. Slip into some Hogan shoes, or grab a gift at Kitson's, which has items for everyone from 6 months to 60. This is also the place to spot celebrities, usually noshing at the Ivy, one of the best restaurants in the city, or the Newsroom Café across the street in a building housing New Line Pictures and a great kids bookstore named Storyopolis.
Los Angeles Melrose Avenue
This is the tale of two streets. Since the early '80s, the stretch of Melrose between Fairfax and La Brea avenues has defined hip shopping in Los Angeles. The storefronts alone are works of pop art, and the approximately dozen blocks are still packed with hipsters trying to score the latest cool attire. Check out Red Balls, Slow, and Von Dutch for great clothing. Aardvark's and Wasteland specialize in secondhand items. On west side of Fairfax Avenue, Melrose has emerged as a high-end paradise. Lower-key stores such as miu miu, the legendary Fred Segal's, Costume National, and Forinara all have made it a deserving alternative to the Robertson Boulevard experience. Everything from lingerie at Agent Provocateur to great home accessories at designer Jonathan Adler's store round out this definitive L.A. shopping experience.
LOs Angeles Beverly
A quieter, more sophisticated cousin to its northern neighbor Melrose, this sleepy street features an eclectic array of stores. There is Beige, one of the best boutiques in the city, the men's store K. Bond, and Naked, which features exclusive selections from European designers. The latter is like the boulevard on which it sits: cool and laidback, and there is no pressure to buy. Erewhon is an upscale health food store whose deli has great food served by extremely rude food jockeys. That's what happens when you're a frustrated actor. And from the "Only in L.A." file, at Fifi and Romeo you can buy matching sweaters for you and your dog.
Los Angeles Third Street
This street has grown to become a great shopping walk. There are a slew of fantastic antique stores, wonderful boutiques such as Aero & Co and Polka Dots & Moonbeams, and specialty stores such as Zipper's modern home accessories and unique gifts. Grab a healthy bite at Real Food Daily, some diner fare at the tiny Who's on Third, or some succulent tapas at the Spanish eatery Cava. Further east down the street is the new upscale restaurant A.O.C., owned by the chefs behind the acclaimed Lucques and Border Grill. And if the trip down this quaint street isn't enough, score a guidebook to virtually anywhere else in the world at the small-but-packed Travel Bookstore.
Los Angeles Montana Avenue
This street tucked away in Santa Monica caters to mostly the "Industry" types who flock to this sunny oasis of stores sequestered in a secluded upscale neighborhood. Cafes and quiet boutiques provide a backdrop, as the upscale clientele lazily stroll down the street, many walking pooches or window-shopping. The gem in this street's string of stores is Pearl, owned by Jack's daughter Jennifer Nicholson. Check out her own cool line of clothes as well as accessories from the hottest new designers.
Los Angeles La Brea
This boulevard is seen by most as a major north-south tributary and by others as a east-west dividing line between the west side of L.A. and the rest of the city. So it is easy to overlook the many fine establishments. If you want to uncover that rare piece of hardware for your house (Liz's hardware), a great skirt or jeans at L.A.'s best vintage store (Jet Rag), some simply great duds (American Rag), an obscure foreign film (Rocket Video), or the best hot dog in the city (Pink's), you can find it here. You can even do lunch at a flower shop (Rita Flora) or find amazing Peking Duck (Lucky Duck).
Los Angeles Downtown Santee Alley
The fashion district of L.A conjures images of sweatshops, but in reality there is a fascinating collision of cultures that makes this area a great microcosm of Los Angeles in all its shine and grime. Called a bargain hunters paradise, Santee Alley features lots of knockoffs of designer shoes and clothing at really low prices. A great time to go is the first Friday of every month, when the California Mart has sample sales. And the wares aren't limited to clothing. You can find everything from reams of fabric to Powerpuff Girl piñatas.

Eurotrash, tourists, and celebrities populate this chi-chi stretch of Sunset Blvd that is dotted with outdoor cafes and boutiques. The Coffee Bean here is like a clubÑpickup your coffee and your next date. But if you are not one of the beautiful people (or at least rich), you will be left holding a lukewarm latte and a broken heart. Many of the top boutiques, such as Madison and Anna Sui, can be found here, as well as new kids on the block, like O, which features Ann Cherico's stunning accessories. Or just grab a seat at one of the many European cafes of the Chinese fast food Chin Chin and let your eyes focus on all the beautiful people. Tip: Nearby at the hip Standard hotel, you can get low-cost, cuttingÐedge salon services.

The Angels are starting to get a little upset with Ervin Santana. A pitcher with his type of arm should be dominating at the major league level. But, ability doesn’t always turn into results in the majors. Santana has now pitched in 84 games (82 starts) in his major league career and he is 35-30 with a 4.84 ERA and a 1.37 WHIP. Santana needs to throw more first pitch strikes as he makes big mistakes when he falls behind in the count often grooving pitches right down the middle that result in dingers for the opposition. Santana has allowed 64 homers in only 487.2 innings in his career to date and that will need to change if he ever wants to be a consistent winner at the major league level.

don't have the adequate words to express how much I love the Hold Steady.
When I first heard them, and Craig Finn's vocals, I didn't like them. This guy can't sing, I thought. What the hell is this? And then the piano yoked me in, and the violins and textured guitars that swell under the choruses or bell out into lush, epic finales (ref. "Killer Parties") , and...the words. Those words! They're koans, they're the pure beauty of simple, straightforward poetry. Henry Miller, Hemingway...Finn. As Emily Dickinson said, "For writers, a success prescription / fewer words, more description."

In an effort to raise awareness of prostate cancer, and to help rid the calendar of any month that begins "No", some mates from Australia and New Zealand launched "Movember," a 30 day stretch where dudes let their "mo" (Australian for "moustache) grow. Now in its fourth year, Movember is going international, spreading to the UK, Canada, Spain, and the United States.

Anyone can join... well, assuming you can grow facial hair. Just register online with a clean mug, alone or with some buds, and you'll earn the title "Mo Bro." Ladies can also join as a "Bro Sista" who'll help recruit and support the Mo Bros.

Local Mo Bros and Mo Sistas who raise $100 from sponsors by the end of Movember gain entry into a gala celebration at the Avalon on November 30th, where their mos will be judge by an "expert panel" for titles including Gala Parté Man of Movember or Best Mo in Class. Curbed bring us the welcome new that the Tower of Babel Park Fifth project that was supposed to provide eternal shade to Pershing Square, is floundering. They've supposedly lost their main investor and he plans may not go forward at all.

My glee at this news is purely selfish, as I will now not be living next to a construction site for the next five years.

Besides, I don't want our lovely Library Tower to be eclipsed.

As you probably know this site is part of a global network of blogs and from time to time something happens that requires the attention of more than just the people in one specific city. Something like that is happening right now. We're just getting the reports from our bloggers in Karachi, Lahore, and Islamabad right now but Emergency Rule Martial Law has been declared in Pakistan and the Press and Media has been ordered to cease broadcasting and STFU. The country is expecting a presidential address later in the day. Here are a few specific posts to look at, but keep checking the above links for the most up to the moment info.

Los Angles Fresh & Easy Arcadia opens 11/8

I got the confirmation a couple of days ago Arcadia's Fresh & Easy near the intersection of Foothill and 2nd Avenue is set to open Thursday 11/8. I haven't been able to get the solid confirmation for Glassel Park but it too may open on 11/8. As soon as I have something positive I'll let you know.

I found out that prior to the opening in Arcadia, Fresh & Easy got a list of local non-profit agencies. The new store employees will review the list and vote to decide who will receive $1,000 grants to help fund their programs. I think that it is terrific when a company contributes back to the community. Even better when they contribute before they even start sales and making a profit. A welcome wagon basket in reverse, what a great idea. (I can't wait for them to get to Monrovia so I can make some nominations to groups who need help.)

The Little Radio warehouse downtown is brimming with developers, technologists, artists, inventors, coders and geeks of every kind - almost 200 of 'em, the largest crowd ever seen at BarCamp LA.

The un-conference on tech and emerging media is wide open - anyone can attend, so long as you have an interest in learning and sharing knowledge about technology.

Sessions are scheduled throughout the day today and tomorrow, and tonight there's a party, PowerPoint karaoke and general gameplay and geekery until the wee hours, when those like me who are camping out at the warehouse will eventually crash until morning.

I spotted this gem in the near empty parking lot at 2nd and Foothill in Arcadia this afternoon. Getting closer it has hundreds of signatures wishing peace etc.,. Also attached were a bunch of brochures. Interesting concept, walk across the country to reunite the "Church" but does not give the denomination just vauge "Christians" reference. That should be a challenge as the Christian sects only begrudgingly acknowlege that they worship the same god on a good day.

Los Angeles Rhythms of Life with Vox & the On Ensemble

As a former staff member of Vox Femina Los Angeles, the premier women's choral group of our fine city, I regularly attend the concerts by this wonderful group. But I know choral music can be a hard sell, especially in this town of a million things to do.

That said, my guests and I had such a wonderful time at the Vox performance tonight, I wanted to share some of the highlights so that anyone interested might decide to catch the (final) performance on Sunday afternoon. If you like music with a great beat, world music, or taiko (drumming), then you should definitely catch this concert. The women of Vox sounded amazing; their voices blended beautifully; sometimes they were the percussion section.

But the highlight of the performance was the Los Angeles based On (pronounced Ohn) Ensemble, a troupe of taiko drummers who bring a unique world fusion mix to the tradition of taiko. With musical experience ranging from centuries-old Kabuki music to jazz, rock and electronica, the On Ensemble features taiko drums in conjunction with turntable, western drum kit, bamboo flute, koto (Japanese zither), and Tuvan overtone singing.

That's right. Turntable. And throat singing. By some really awesome taiko drummers. (Only in/from L.A.!)

I loved this performance not only because each ensemble was excellent in their individual sets, but because they came together at the end as two L.A.-based groups performing as one.

And you can still catch them downtown at Zipper Hall at the Colburn School of Performing Arts.

Our high for 2005 was 75, while our all-time high record for 2006 year was 87 Supercentenarians on November 9th. Our Chief Claims investigator, Mr. Robert Young of Atlanta, GA, has speculated that there are systematic seasonal variations each year with highs during the late Spring and early Summer and a fall-off in the latter part of the Summer or early Fall. This observation is purely empirical, and we have no scientific rationale for a mechanism for why this should be so. There may be statistical artifacts in the way our Japanese cases are reported to us by their government on an irregular basis.

The large ratio of women to men cannot be explained in simple terms. Although there is no shortage of hypotheses to explain why women outlive men by such a large margin at the end of human life (e.g., men are naturally more aggressive and therefore more likely to die violently or as soldiers in war, while women were always, but no longer, likely to die in child birth) none of these hypotheses are fully convincing. However, the ostensible protective effects of estrogen (and the lesser harmful effects of cortisol, as women are presumed on average to have less chronic stress) are the most plausible. However, the present differential life expectancy in favor of women for men-and-women-living-to-age-65 is expected to decline in future decades, as the rate of heart disease, our number-one killer, equilibrates once women pass menopause (and their estrogen is depleted -- in the absence of HRT. By the way, not all forms of HRT are protective, as we have sadly discovered in a surprising clinical trial with Premarin showing that it may not only be non-protective, it could actually contribute to a higher mortality compared with controls taking nothing at all (especially in women whose onset of HRT was not immediately following menopause to alleviate hot-flashes, but a few years later on)! The Route-of-Administration [pill vs. patch] and first-pass [through the liver] effects may be important. Bioidentical vs. synthetic estrogens could also be important. Clinical trials are presently underway to tease out these uncertainties. Curiously, we have seen a recent hypotheses that women have longer telomeres compared with men). Nevertheless, based on our own empirical statistics here at the GRG, the extraordinary longevity difference by gender in "the oldest old" has not shrunk over the last five years. As just one observation, the world's oldest person for the last five years has always been a woman (although this has not been true throughout history and it is not currently true following the death of Lizzie Bolden of Tennessee (December 11, 2006)). An American Realist

Although he plays a college professor in his latest film, Robert Redford was, by his own admission, never much of a student, consistently more interested in what was going on outside the classroom window than inside. But there’s one moment from Redford’s academic past that burns brightly in his memory. The year was 1950 and Redford was a junior-high student in Van Nuys, suffering through one of those standardized achievement tests that are the bane of every school kid’s existence. Suddenly, one particular section of the exam grabbed his attention. “There was this picture, and you had to figure out what was wrong with it,” Redford recalls. “The picture seemed to be totally perfect — a woman was standing on a porch with a broom, and a mailman who had just delivered the mail was talking to her. And I got so excited — I was going to find out what was wrong there!” Then Redford found the answer: The woman was wearing only one sock.

In the more than 50 years since that eureka moment, Robert Redford has stayed on the lookout for the subtle fissures in seemingly flawless façades, whether it be the American government’s veil of inviolability ( All the President’s Men), broadcast television’s carefully stage-managed reality (Quiz Show ) or the stiff upper lips of a tragedy-stricken suburban family (Ordinary People). Now, Redford is once again traversing the chasm between the American dream and the American reality in a new film, Lions for Lambs , that meets the War on Terror and a grab bag of other sociopolitical issues head-on, making for one of the year’s most provocative and polarizing moviegoing experiences.

Directed, produced by and starring Redford, Lions weaves an intricate tapestry of a failed America, beginning on an unnamed Southern California college campus, where a bright but slackerish student (newcomer Andrew Garfield) settles in for a conference with the political-science prof (Redford) who sees unrealized potential in the boy. At the same moment, in the corridors of Beltway power, a rising Republican senator (Tom Cruise) offers a seasoned reporter (Meryl Streep) an exclusive scoop about his new plan for winning the war in Afghanistan (and, by proxy, Iraq). Meanwhile, half a world away, where the senator’s strategy went into effect “10 minutes ago,” two U.S. soldiers find themselves stranded in enemy territory after their helicopter was shot down by Afghan insurgents. Providing a further point of connection, the soldiers are former students of the professor, whose advocacy of action over apathy led them to enlist in the first place.

Simply put, Lions for Lambs (which screens as the opening-night attraction of the AFI Fest before opening nationwide on November 9) is a movie about people talking in a room. Or rather, four people talking in two rooms, hashing out political and personal ideologies while, on a mountaintop in Afghanistan, the lives of two men hang in the balance. Of course, what’s really at stake (in case you missed the point, which is pretty hard to do) is the future of our nation itself. It’s the sort of theatrical premise that wouldn’t have seemed out of place on one of the socially relevant 1960s television anthology series where Redford did some of his first screen acting. But if Lions for Lambs , which springs from the pen of 34-year-old screenwriter Matthew Michael Carnahan, is wordy and unsubtle in the extreme, it’s also that rare Hollywood movie that fully possesses the strength of its own convictions, and which pursues them with a commitment and intellectual rigor far removed from the reductive faux humanism of Rendition and In the Valley of Elah.

“In the current climate, audiences are accustomed to and seem to crave hard, visceral action films where you go inside the pores of the wound and everything’s moving at 150 miles per hour,” Redford says, offering a fairly succinct description of the other Carnahan-scripted political drama currently in release, The Kingdom.

It’s a rainy October morning in Boston, where the filmmaker is winding up a college promotional tour that has included stops at Berkeley and Harvard. And when he arrives (late, as is his custom) for our interview, there’s no mistaking the wiry figure in sweater, jeans and brown loafers being ushered through the lobby of the Ritz-Carlton hotel, no matter that the famous flaxen hair is mostly hidden beneath a Red Sox cap, the blazing blue eyes concealed behind aviator shades. For all his interest in the misleading surfaces of things, Redford himself is a failure at camouflage — an asset if you want to be one of the most recognizable movie stars on the planet and a liability if you want to be taken seriously as a film artist. More on that a bit later.

For now, though, our conversation centers on other matters. At first, Redford says, he wondered if Lions for Lambs might work better as a play. “Then I thought: Wait a minute. How many times are you going to get a script that’s really able to touch on some of the issues that concern you? The fact that they’re talking heads in a room is something you should embrace and figure out if you can make it dynamic enough. I started to see the film in a new way, and I got excited about it. I said, ‘I think I’ll take a chance on this.’”

Soon, Redford had two powerful allies willing to ante up with him — his Out of Africa co-star Streep, and Cruise, who saw Lions not just as a potential starring vehicle for himself, but as the perfect flagship production for the newly resurrected United Artists studio, which Cruise and producing partner Paula Wagner assumed control of last year. “Just the idea that Tom was interested in it was the first thing that intrigued me,” says Redford, noting that the senator character was originally written as both older and African-American, something of a Colin Powell surrogate. “Then I started to think about the qualities that Tom exhibited on film, which were intensity, a kind of all-American energy and an appealing youthfulness. And I began to see him in the skin of this guy who’s fundamentally going to be running for office all the time .”

Outsourcing off Los Angeles

What if you could outsource to a company that offered the cost savings of an India-based outsourcing firm, but whose facilities were just a few hours away?

That’s the premise of three entrepreneurs in San Diego, who are in the final throes of launching a company that will offer software development off the coast of California—three miles outside Los Angeles, to be specific.

The three plan to buy a used cruise ship and station it close enough for a half-hour water taxi ride to shore, but far enough to avoid H1B jurisdiction. According to CEO David Cook, who was a tanker ship captain before going into IT ten years ago, project pricing “will be comparable to a distant-shore firm.”

By stationing the ship in international waters, the company, called SeaCode, will be able to remain close to U.S. clients while picking and choosing IT talent from around the world—something that tightening H1B visa requirements have made difficult in the U.S.

Depending on your point of view, it may also allow them to pay less than the rate a team of U.S. developers would command.

That assumes that the talent is willing to live on a ship, of course, which may not be as tough as it sounds. Cook says the ship will retain all of its cruise ship facilities and will feed and house workers in style. During off hours, programming teams can partake of the ship’s recreational facilities or head for the lights of L.A. on a water taxi, since each worker will be required to have a U.S. tourist visa, Cook says.

The offshore-on-a-ship concept isn’t the only radical idea here. The ship’s 600 or so developers and project managers will form assorted around-the-clock development teams. When one shift finishes, the next shift will pick up the same project. That unusual arrangement will allow the company to finish jobs in half the time typically allocated while maintaining equivalent quality and control. “A key part of the plan is having everyone together there on the ship,” Cook says. “We call them pods and pod leaders. The pods all live in the same area in the ship, work at the same time, go ashore together. It’s a natural function of what happens on a ship.”

The idea, which came to light two weeks ago in a blog entry at Sourcingmag.com, a Web site that covers IT outsourcing, has generated some predictable heat. Longtime IT columnist John Dvorak disparaged the idea as an “Indian slave ship” in his blog (http://www.dvorak.org/blog/?p=1767), then posted a contribution from a reader showing the ship as a giant golf course (http://www.dvorak.org/blog/?m=20050408).

At first blush, admits COO Roger Green, it sounds like they’re trying to avoid U.S. taxes, regulations and pay rates. Not so, he maintains. SeaCode will be a U.S. corporation, and the ship will fall under a number of state and federal regulations. Green, who has managed outsourcing projects before, says just 10 percent of every dollar spent will go to paying developers—most of whom will probably be non-U.S. citizens. Remaining expenses will overhead—for equipment and supplies, fuel and other costs—all purchased in the U.S., the three say.

How much will developers be paid? That will depend on skill set, not country of origin. Cook says they aren’t interested in competing for “low-level, Visual Basic-type” work, but rather, enterprise-type projects that require advanced coding and project management skills. That may well mean hiring U.S. workers for some of the slots, the three say, workers who will be paid at a rate comparable to what they’d earn in the U.S.

For non-U.S. developers, “The take-home money [will be] the same as if someone was working as an H1B inside this country,” Cook says.

“We’ll pay for your skills,” Cook says. The rate may not be competitive for an L.A. developer “in the lower-level ranks,” he says, “but as you become a manager, absolutely.” As for non-U.S. workers, “you’re going to find [wages] far higher than the country you’re from. You’re getting paid so well that Indian [workers] will be able to go home and pay cash for a house.”

The team programming concept comes naturally to the three, since two of the founders, Cook and CTO Joe Conway, have worked on ships. There, they say, it’s natural to hand tasks, even highly complex ones, off to the next shift. Conway, who has a broad and deep background in software development, says he did that repeatedly aboard Navy nuclear subs at an earlier point in his career.

Cook also says that SeaCode will be able to hire many highly talented women developers, who because of social norms often have difficulty finding work in third-world countries. “If you go to India, some incredibly talented women [developers] have a very difficult time getting a job.” In contrast, Cook says, his company specifically plans to hire some percentage of women to take advantage of that overlooked talent pool.

The company will use microwave and U.S. providers for phone and Internet access, thus addressing a common outsourcing concern: ownership of intellectual property. Under international law, Cook says, the first point of contact with land determines whose laws will apply. “One of reasons we’re doing things this way is so U.S law will apply.”

Another common outsourcing concern, security, is also addressed, he says. Physical access to the ship is clearly limited, and any code transmitted moves immediately onto secure U.S. Internet lines.

The company has secured funding and is ready to launch once they sign on the first client, Green says. At that point, they’ll move quickly to secure the ship (a used cruise ship goes for $10 million to $300 million, Cook says), hire the right team and get started. At this point, they’re just three to six months from having a team aboard writing code, Green says.

Los Angeles Understand

Even before O.J. drove the Bronco or "The Terminator" became governor, Frank Lloyd Wright said, "Tip the world over on its side and everything loose will land in Los Angeles."

The Los Angeles metro area has been a "boomtown" since the completion of the transcontinental railroad in 1876, first attracting "the folks" from the Midwest with a blessedly warm and dry climate--and becoming a gateway to a remarkable diversity of immigration from throughout the Pacific Rim and Latin America.

L.A. is a sprawling megalopolis; one could start in one end of L.A. and drive for more than two hours without leaving the county's influence. The metro area includes smaller cities, such as Santa Monica, Burbank, Pasadena and Long Beach, which were founded around the end of the nineteenth century and retain distinct identities. Geographically, there is very little logic as to what is part of the city of L.A.; for example, Hollywood is not a separate city--it is part of the City of Los Angeles--but adjacent West Hollywood and Beverly Hills are not part of the city.

The city's primary newspaper is the Los Angeles Times. The free LA Weekly comes out on Thursdays and is a good source for concerts and other local information. Local areas may have their own free papers as well.

City Preps Filming RFP Terms; Lots to Like for Downtowners

On the same day the Writers Guild is expected to go on strike, the City has released a Request for Proposals (RFP) for film permitting services currently performed by Film LA. While ongoing discussion of special filming conditions for Downtown seek to better refine how filming much respond to Downtown's changing nature, the terms of the RFP get at practical issues like notification and how complaints are handled.

Unlike the existing setup where Film LA handles all aspects of permitting, the RFP allows interested parties to submit bids on one or more of three service categories: permit coordination, notification and complaint referral. The results of a Request for Information (RFI) issued this summer identified 15 potential bidders for one or more of the components.

Saturday and Sunday Arte Calidad's Eighth Annual Festival De La Gente stretched across the historic Sixth Street Viaduct linking Downtown and Boyle Heights in what is declared as the nation's largest Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) celebration. This year's event marked the second in which Downtown organizations played a noticeable role, with organizers doing their part to forge a strong link between the two sides of the Los Angeles River.

Festival arrivals from the Eastside stumbled onto a giant block party, while those coming from the Downtown side got a different look. They saw a third of a mile of bridge span used as a parking lot before finally encountering artists booths, altars, and lowriders. The festival's main stage was set up in the intersection of 6th and Boyle, off the bridge and back onto real ground.

Pershing Square Ice Rink Begins Its Setup

This week the foundations are getting set up for Pershing Square's annual ice rink, scheduled to make its season debut on November 15th. Skating runs until 10pm each night, seven days a week. One hour of skating will run you $6, with skates an extra $2.

If you haven't made it out to the ice before, it's certainly worth doing. Yes, the rink is small, but just consider how absurd it is to be on ice skates in the middle of Downtown Los Angeles. I think given that, we can excuse small. More information at Pershing Square's website.

Justin Timberlake at the Staples Center

Last night the Staples Center hosted the last date of Justin Timberlake's North American FutureSex/LoveShow Tour. Mr. Timberlake's been rocking the Staples Center since Sunday (so the girl sitting in front of me confirmed). To say that the man is talented would be understating it. His performance at the Staples Center is a reflection on how this artist has catapulted his way out of boy band non-obscurity - through sheer talent and great music collaborations. I had a good vantage point for saying this show was amazing. My friend Jay and I were sitting in the back....waaaaaay in the back.

The show opened at 8:00 with Good Charlotte and the Justin Timberlake concert itself didn't start until after 9. Nonetheless, the show was well worth the wait - opening up with fog and an incredible use of lights and great stage design. The last time I was at the Staples Center was for a Lakers game...oh, how a basketball arena can be transformed.

There's a good advantage to sitting in the back row of the Staples Center for a concert of this caliber. You get to see the entire stage design and Justin Timberlake running around most parts of the stage. I'd say that I'm being optimistic and positive about my concert experience, and while, yes I am, it's true.

Nokia Shows Off Its Versatility on Day Two

It didn't take the Nokia Theatre long to get its game on. After only one night the venue pushed the Eagles aside to host Video Games Live, the touring live performance of game music scheduled as part of the E for All expo taking place in the Convention Center next door. The inevitable hiccups that come with opening a new venue were all worked out by show time, and the fact that such a schedule was even attempted shows AEG's faith in their new venue.

Green Dot to Open a School for Downtown?

Earlier this week the Times ran an interview with AEG head Tim Leiweke talking about the company and its big bet on Downtown. It was a good read, but one bit in particular stuck out to me. When asked about LAUSD, Leiweke replied:

I think people can go spend all the money they want on L.A. Unified, but I'm frustrated with L.A. Unified because I can't figure out how anyone's ever going to fix it. So we love Green Dot. We've already made a million-dollar commitment to Green Dot for the charter school that they're going to put on our end of town. I hope L.A. Unified gets worked out, but I worry about L.A. Unified.

One has to assume that "on our end of town" means that AEG is working with Green Dot to place a school in South Park. I emailed Green Dot's PR contact to try and get a statement from them, but did not get a response.

If correct, this would be a great bit of news for Downtown. Education and schools are going to be big issues for Downtown in the next ten years. Green Dot's doing important things for education in LA, and it would be a big plus to have them charter a school to serve South Park. Though the group operates a school Downtown -- Oscar De La Hoya Animo Charter High School, which meets in the World Trade Center -- it does not currently serve Downtown students.

Something Opens Downtown... Cue the Kotkin Naysaying

Reading the subtitle of the Times story on the Nokia Theatre's opening I just knew we were going to see a Joel Kotkin quote.

Officials hope Nokia helps spur more growth and leisure activity downtown. But some experts have doubts.

Any time a paper needs an "expert" to have doubts about Downtown LA, Kotkin's always there to help out. This story's no exception.

"If you put the Eagles in my backyard, people would come," said a skeptical Joel Kotkin, a presidential fellow at Chapman University who has written extensively about Los Angeles' urban life. "The Forum was in Inglewood. Did that make Inglewood the center of the music scene?"

This is the same Joel Kotkin who has called urban living a fad, opined that Marina Del Rey was an infinitely better choice than Downtown, and called LA Live better suited for Cincinnati. We get the point already: he doesn't like Downtown. That reporters keep going back to that well doesn't speak too kindly to their work ethic.

Downtown's Dogs may meet Duarte

When blogdowntowner reader and commenter Urban Bruin organized a dog owner social, over a dozen canine dragged their owners through the streets of Downtown's "Westside." As people gathered, instantly you could see the event as a potential Neighborhood Watch Walk. A dog walk edition would make a unique add to the already successful Downtown walks in Skid Row and the Arts District.

Since blogdowntown and our community minded readers are all for bringing Downtown closer together, we caught up with LAPD Senior Lead Officer Marco Duarte at Pershing Square. He's all for the idea and hopes to meet up at the next Downtown Dog social, and have the walk be a Neighborhood Watch Walk at least once a month.

Now all we need is for the LAPD K-9 team to join in.

Side Note: The missing sod behind Duarte isn't due to dogs tearing up the place. L.A. Park and Recreation is getting Pershing Square ready for its popular winter ice skating rink, opening next month.

The Best Chicago-Style Hot Dog in LA

This is not a competition for the all-around best hot dog in LA. You can find a hot dog served in any conceivable manner in this city, there’s a dog for everyone. Is a Chicago-style hot dog better than any other hot dog you can find or make? Even though it all comes down to personal preference, the answer is still yes. It’s so good that every time I eat one with a newbie, they all say the exact same thing, “Damn, homey just smashed it.” It’s so good that it puts your life in perspective.

The Chicago-style hot dog has strict criteria. It’s a Vienna Beef Hot Dog with mustard, chopped onion, relish (neon green in color), tomatoes, sport peppers, celery salt, and a pickle all served on a poppy seed bun. Eating one will keep you going, eating two will take you out, eating three is suicide, but at least you’ll go out with a smile.

To have a solid basis of comparison for the competition, I ate at some of Chicago’s finest hot dog stands such as Portillo’s, Wrigleyville Dogs, Hot Doug’s, and Wiener’s Circle. Wiener’s Circle had the best looking dog, so we’ll use it as the standard.

There are so many toppings that you can barely see the hot dog.

I excluded Oki Dog, Skooby’s, and Papoo’s because they don’t serve a Chicago-Style. I also left out Portillo’s in Buena Park because it’s in Buena Park.

The competitors are: QT’s Chicago Dogs, Carney’s, Rubin’s Red Hot, Weiner Factory, Pink’s, The Stand, and Taste Chicago. They’ll be ranked on authenticity, price, and overall taste.

The latest frozen yogurt craze has arrived in La Cañada. The hip and trendy Pinkberry, the franchise that brought back the dessert that has exploded into a cultural phenomenon, will be opening a branch in La Cañada by the end of the year. The hard- to-miss bright pink building began interior construction earlier this week at the site next to Chocolate Box Café previously occupied by Cute-Clothes.com.

The Korean owned and operated Pinkberry sought out the city for architectural and business approvals two months ago in hopes of launching a store in LCF. The city played no role in bringing in Pinkberry.

Seven (hundred and seventy-five million) for All Mankind

Depending on your perspective, Los Angeles today may have either lost or regained a small slice of its soul. Seven For All Mankind Jeans has been sold to North Carolina-based VF Corporation for a sum that can only be described as “whopping” $775 Million. The Los Angeles-founded brand affected culture in a way few do, pioneering the high-end jeans market with its launch in 2000.

For kicks, a bit of unintelligible business press release-ese follows. (Which I swear is its own distinct dialect of English):

“These brands extend our reach to important and growing consumer segments, broaden our presence in healthy and growing channels of distribution, provide us with additional vehicles to expand our direct-to-consumer business through owned retail stores and online sales and offer the potential for continued growth internationally,” said Mackey McDonald, chief executive of VF…

With acquisition of Seven, VF Corp is one step closer to total brand domination. Their portfolio already includes Blue Chip brands Wrangler, Lee Jeans, Vans, JanSport and North Face. Perhaps it’s only a matter of time before we see Sevens on racks in Target under their ownership.

But did Seven cash out of the jeans game at the right time? Take, for example, as a current indicator of the stupefying absurdities towards which the high-end jeans racket has drifted, that apparently none other than Damien Hirst has recently decided to design high-end Levi’s for their ‘Warhol Factory X line (who knew?) of Levi’s for 2008. Are mass-produced Hirst/Warhol co-branded Levi’s the culmination of the genre; the ironic death blow? Laughing right in consumers’ faces while taking ever more of their money for the same exact product?

Good riddances all around then, perhaps.

Los Angeles is a melting pot, so it’s no surprise that there are foreign-owned small businesses whose storefront signs are sometimes lost in translation.

There’re also the businesses that disregard conventional rules of advertising and make up their own.

Then there are businesses with storefronts that are so out there, you can’t even speculate on what the fuck they were thinking.

My best guess? It’s an all-age dance club where the bouncer won’t let you in unless you’re dressed as a deranged serial killer. That’s a real shitty guess. So I have no clue.

2007 Sunset Junction Street Fair

This is a wide shot intended to convey the general atmosphere of the festival. Festivals frequently feature large numbers of people (”festival goers”), mechanical contraptions that move bodies through space, against our normal physics in an enjoyable fashion (”rides”) and temporary food and consumer product vendor stations (”booths”). Festivals frequently take place in the open air, as can be seen here.

A turquoise neon backlit waterfall is the centerpiece and crowning touch of what has to be the most exotic and over the top restaurant façade ever. The craggily cafeteria front has ‘lil caves of multi-colored light and a jungle of tropical plantings. This was Adventureland before Adventureland - the Tiki Room before the Tiki Room. Clifford Clinton, the king of cafeterias, dreamed this up in 1939. It must’ve been shocking then. It still is today. His son, Don, took this slide IN 1950. Thank you Don!

In the realm of Polynesian themed eateries Clifton’s Pacific Seas is, without a question, one of the most spectacular ever! It is the younger and shorter-lived sister of Clifton’s Brookdale Cafeteria. The Brookdale, delightfully done in a most charming redwood forest theme, serves up steam table savories and delicious desserts at the corner of Seventh and Broadway in downtown Los Angeles just as it has since it opened 1935. Clifton’s Pacific Seas was just blocks away on Olive just below Sixth. After just twenty-one years the Polynesian palace closed in 1960. For what reason I don’t know. The parking lot that replaced it is still there.

Themed interiors and environments were not invented in Southern California, but they certainly were perfected here. Clifford Clinton was a master right up there with Walt Disney, Walter Knott and Alex Madonna (Madonna Inn.)

Even without our dearly departed Clifton’s Pacific Seas cafeteria, downtown Los Angeles is still a hotbed of unique, unusual, bizarre and breathtaking vintage places to experience. And you can do so this Sunday Oct 14 and next Sunday the 21st. Of course, we’ll be eating lunch at Clifton’s Brookdale Cafeteria!!!

The likelihood of the inflatables not going up until the threat of Santa Ana's is over given the stout breezes we've been getting. Still no word on his standing in the Monrovia city sponsored decorating contest.

Sculpitechture: Hover Craft

One of the things I love about my neck of the woods is that about twice a year the courtyard at 1619 Silver Lake Boulevard something new and unreal gets installed. Such is the case with Materials & Applications current project called Density Fields, which went live October 12 and definitely puts the "can" in cantilever.

From the M&A website:

An "extreme cantilever" built from aluminum and polypropylene rope will hover over the courtyard of Materials & Applications (M&A) in Silver Lake, Los Angeles. This structure is an outdoor installation created by SCI-Arc professors Dwayne Oyler and Jenny Wu, called Density Fields. Defying classification as either sculpture or architecture, the piece will flex with a gesture that extends imaginary lines of force beyond the small courtyard, seeming to pierce buildings and features in the neighborhood.

North Los Angeles Introduction
Northern Los Angeles County (and by that we mean from County Line to the northwestern most corner of Santa Monica) isn't what you're thinking. This mountainous, lush, green, quite, wave-rich stretch of coast is the yang to metro L.A.'s formidable, grid-like, flat, paved, wave-starved yin.

The jewel of North L.A. County is, of course, Malibu, where Miki Dora laid down the law, and hordes of surf-stoked city boys follow it to the letter. This is the beach where Gidget hung out and where surfing's mainstream movement took roots. Today, the retro movement calls Malibu its Mecca, and you'll see groups of 19-year-old guys sitting on the hoods of their 1940s Plymouths, smoking Camel Lights, and combing their hair back. This sight can instantly transport you back to pre-Vietnam America, and you might suddenly get the urge to go out and vote for Kennedy. It's not unusual to rock up to Malibu on a hot August afternoon with a 4-foot swell peeling 150 yards down the point, and see 200 surfers in the water ... all vying for one wave. And if you drop in on Cameron Diaz or Zach de la Rocha, try not to hit them, they're national treasures.

But Mal isn't the only good thing about this northern wing of the city of angels. Other spots include Zuma Beach, Leo Carillo, and the enigmatic and occasionally über-perfect Topanga. Fish and longboards go really well in this stretch of the world, so don't be afraid to do the time warp.

In a word: yes. Malibu is only eclipsed by Australia's Superbank when it comes to the most crowded spots on the planet, but the beauty of Malibu is that it frees up many of the surrounding spots by collecting nearly everyone. Keep in mind that Los Angeles County is home of over 10,000,000 people.

L.A. localism isn't very strong because almost everyone in the water had to make an hour commute to get there, though you might run into some real old-school locals now and then.

Hazards
Shark attacks aren't very common in L.A. Scientists theorize that sharks have too much self respect to spend a lot of time there. The bigger dangers here are petty theft, super-heater car seats, parking, and ultra-aggressive, balding lawyers who use the ocean as a form of therapy. Summer
Summer in Los Angeles is typically warm and mild with temperatures reaching into the 90s, yet cooled by the ocean breeze -- T-shirt and flip-flop weather. Water temperatures generally hover in the high 60s through summer, which is a bit chilly, but you can still surf in the raw, and the surf comes almost exculsively from the south. September through November is the best time to surf in Southern California with cleaner and even warmer conditions than summer. The word "winter," when applied to SoCal, is almost a misnomer. December brings generally clear skies and temperatures in the 60s and 70s, though a few nights each winter can get down near the freezing point. This is the rainy season, but many find it almost comical to watch the L.A. local news coverage of StormWatch 2000 -- listening to the hype, you'd think there was a biblical flood upon the city. Spring is a good time to surf somewhere else. On the upside, several good sandbars are left over from winter. An early session is your best bet, and don't put the fullsuit away just yet. Los Angeles, California, commonly referred to as L.A., is the United States' second-largest city with a population of almost 4 million. Originally, the Los Angeles area was home to the Tongva and Chumash Indians. In 1769, an expedition of Spanish explorers led by Gaspar de Portola discovered the area. Complement the arts with an exciting nightlife and numerous restaurants including the famous All American Burger and entertainer Kenny Rogers Roasters Restaurants, and L.A. entices up and coming young professionals. For the sports-minded, L.A. is home of MLB's Los Angeles Dodgers and the NBA's Los Angeles Lakers.

When presented with so many areas of study, how does a student choose? A student should consider personal interests and strengths. It is necessary for students to understand themselves and the area of study they are considering before making such a major decision. Students are encouraged to speak with a career counselor or an academic advisor if they need professional guidance.

As well, a student will want to examine the types of industry in the area. "L.A.'s economy is humongous," says David Rattray, Vice President of Education and Workforce Development at the Los Angeles Chamber of Commerce. "We're large and diverse," he continues, "we had a large aerospace industry driving the economy twenty years ago, but now it's not just a single business sector driving everything."

Rattray states that several business sectors are expanding rapidly in Los Angeles, and some of those warrant a higher demand for employees. "The Biomedical industry is growing. A lot of this is stem cell research. Health-related careers are a high growth sector as well. We need more people in all areas of health… from administrative workers to nurses to doctors, all the way to brain surgeons," he says. "The service sector is growing rapidly too. The service sector is slightly misunderstood by the public. It has immense upward mobility, with a high skill-high wage continuum."

Costs

Financial Aid

Despite the perception of an insurmountable task, there are ways to make education affordable. Other options available to students are grants and loans. With no obligation for repayment, grants are normally awarded based on financial need. The school, the state, or the federal government may make these awards. Loans are available thru the state and federal governments. They must be paid back; beginning 6 months after the student completes his/her studies. A few examples of these are the Perkins Loan, the Federal Stafford, and the Federal Plus loans. Annually, 10 million students apply for these loans while 9 million will receive them.

Finally, students can obtain scholarships for school. Some scholarships are available to all students, while others are of special interest, awarded to students based upon gender, ethnicity, financial need, area of residence, age, and major.

Internships

When reviewing a resume, an employer is looking for more than a degree. They want to see practical experience that's relevant to the job. A student can gain that experience through an internship. Internships are more than jobs; they are a great way to get a closer look at an industry, a particular occupation, or a company. An internship helps a student learn if the career they are considering is right for him or her. As well, an internship may turn into a job offer. Some are paid or give college credits. Others may simply provide an opportunity to learn and gain valuable experience.

The Los Angeles Chamber of commerce provides a good example of industry working with education to provide opportunities such as internships for students. David Rattray again comments, "We work to try and influence and shape programs that universities have for the demands of the marketplace. For example, we're doing a program with Cal-State called the CSU advantage", he continues. "It works to build a bridge between the work world and the students. We call it co-op, or cooperative, education."

What does this co-op education do? "It's credits for work experience," says Rattray. "We're trying to emphasize the power & promise that a college education has by providing industry experience via internships and job shadowing. Students that do this tend to earn more and advance quicker."

Employment in Los Angeles

Institutions of higher education in Los Angeles work with industry as a means to make job opportunities available to students. While several institutions work with industry to develop and update training programs for students, many host on-campus recruiting via career fairs and seminars. At these events, students can network with others and see, firsthand, which companies are hiring. On the spot interviewing and hiring can take place as well.

The University of California - Los Angeles (UCLA) provides an excellent example of career centers at work for students with career fairs. "We had an 11 percent increase over last year in on-campus recruiting activities including career fairs, on-campus interviews, and career information sessions by employers," said Kathy Sims, Director of the UCLA Career Center. "Some of our traditional employers have contributed to the increase with added hiring this year," she said. "We're also seeing some employers who weren't hiring last year coming back into the market."

"We're encouraging our students to make use of the resources at the career center," Sims further stated. "We also encourage students having difficulty finding jobs to expand their geographic targets, to be more mobile and willing to relocate."
